More Than Martial Arts

Most parents come in asking about kicks and punches. What they find is something more lasting — a child who listens better, sets goals, and carries themselves differently. Since 1985, we've been helping Olive Branch families discover what Taekwondo can do for them, one belt at a time.

Questions, Answered

What ages do you teach at Taekwondo University?

We teach ages 4 through adult. Our Little Warriors program serves ages 4–6, Kids Taekwondo covers ages 7–12, and our Teen/Adult program welcomes everyone 13 and up. Many of our families train together — it’s common to see a parent and child both working toward their black belts. 🥋🥋🥋

How do I know if a martial arts school is right for my family?

Look for experienced instructors, a structured curriculum where rank is earned (not guaranteed), and a welcoming atmosphere you can see for yourself. We’ve been developing well-skilled, highly confident, self-disciplined 🥋 black belts in the Greater Memphis area since 1985 — and the best way to evaluate us is to come try a free class and watch how we teach.

Where are you located?

We’re at 6511 MS-305 in Olive Branch, right next to Piggly Wiggly at the east gate of Olive Branch City Park. We’re an easy drive from Southaven, Byhalia, Collierville, and the greater Memphis area.

What benefits will my child get beyond kicking and punching?

Parents tell us the biggest changes happen on & off the mat: better focus at school, more confidence around peers, improved listening, goal-setting habits, and respect at home. Taekwondo gives kids a structured path where effort is rewarded — a lesson that shapes them for life.

Can I start Taekwondo as a complete beginner?

Absolutely! Many of our students begin with no previous martial arts experience. Our instructors work with each student at their own level and provide step-by-step instruction to help them develop their skills, coordination, confidence, and fitness along the way.

What are the health benefits of Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a great way to improve both physical and mental well-being. With regular training, students can build flexibility, balance, coordination, strength, stamina, reflexes, and overall body awareness. Training can also help improve focus, discipline, confidence, sleep, and peace of mind.

In addition, staying active through martial arts may help reduce stress and support a healthy weight, while regular exercise can contribute to improved overall heart health and wellness.

Students receive individual instruction and feedback from our instructors while also training alongside their classmates in a positive, encouraging, team-oriented environment. This structure allows each student to progress at their own pace while still feeling challenged and supported.

What should I wear or bring to my first class?

Just come dressed in comfortable clothes and ready to have fun! For your trial class, we’ll provide you with a Taekwondo University uniform and belt so you can fully participate alongside our other students. There’s nothing special you need to bring, just come ready to learn and give it a try!

How long will it take me or my child to earn a black belt?

Earning a black belt is a major accomplishment and requires time, dedication, and consistent training. At Taekwondo University, students must meet established standards and demonstrate proficiency in their curriculum as they progress through the ranks.

Because every student progresses at their own pace, the time it takes can vary. Our youngest students, who begin training between ages 4 and 6, typically take approximately 4.5 to 6.5 years to earn their first-degree black belt. Students who begin at age 7 and older typically earn their black belt in approximately 4 to 5 years.

A black belt is not the end of the journey, it is the beginning of a new level of training. Our goal is for every student who earns a black belt at Taekwondo University to have truly developed the skills, knowledge, discipline, and character that the rank represents.

What is the youngest age my child can start Taekwondo?

Our Little Warriors program welcomes children starting at 4 years old. Designed specifically for ages 4–6, this program introduces young students to the basic fundamentals of Taekwondo in a fun, energetic, and age-appropriate environment.

Along with learning martial arts skills, students work on improving coordination, listening skills, self-discipline, respect, focus, and confidence. Little Warriors also gives young children the opportunity to stay active, make friends, and begin developing valuable life skills alongside other students their age.
